The President of the Supreme Court of the Czech Republic Mr Petr Angyalossy today visited Eurojust for the first time since taking office in 2020. Mr Angyalossy was welcomed to the Agency by Eurojust President Mr Ladislav Hamran and National Member for the Czech Republic Mr Lukas Stary. The main aim of the visit was to discuss recent trends in cross-border judicial cooperation and the latest developments at Eurojust, including the rising number of requests for collaboration from and with the Czech authorities.

Eurojust President Mr Ladislav Hamran said: ‘It is a great honour to welcome Mr Angyalossy to our premises in The Hague. The Czech Republic and Eurojust have long enjoyed a strong and fruitful partnership. By administering justice and upholding the rule of law, the Czech Supreme Court plays a crucial role in the fight against cross-border organised crime and terrorism. I look forward to continuing our valuable cooperation in the future.’
President of the Supreme Court of the Czech Republic Mr Petr Angyalossy stated: ‘Crime knows no borders. For this reason in particular, I consider cross-border international cooperation, of which Eurojust is the liaison body in Europe, to be a crucial area of modern criminal law. The increasing importance of cross-border cooperation is also reflected in the swift development of this area of law. My personal experience with extradition of a defendant to Italy and the cooperation with Eurojust as a Regional Court Judge allows me to appreciate the speed, informality and professionalism with which the Agency cooperates in every particular case.’
Furthermore, Mr Angyalossy was introduced to the team members of the Czech national desk at Eurojust. He was given an explanation of the modus operandi for cross-border judicial cooperation and ways to enable large-scale and long-term transnational investigations, such as the setting up and funding of joint investigation teams (JITs) via Eurojust.
Last year, the Czech national desk at the Agency opened up 118 cases to other Member States and third countries, requesting cooperation in large-scale investigations. Other Member States and third countries requested cooperation from the Czech authorities via Eurojust in 121 cases.
Mr Angyalossy was appointed President of the Supreme Court in May 2020 by the President of the Republic Mr Miloš Zeman, after becoming President of the Senate of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court in 2018. In the same year, he was appointed as an ad-hoc judge for the Czech Republic to the joint supervisory body of Eurojust. He also led the working group that prepared the Code of Ethics for Judges of the Czech Republic in 2020.
The President of the Czech Supreme Court was born in 1964 in Přerov and graduated in 1998 from the Faculty of Law of Masaryk University in Brno, receiving the academic degrees of JUDr. and Ph.D. After serving as President of the Senate of the Regional Court in Ostrava since 1999, he became a judge in the High Court of Olomouc in 2004.
