A high-level Eurojust delegation concluded a strategic visit to Cairo this week, aimed at strengthening judicial cooperation with Egyptian authorities. From 9 to 13 November, the group, led by President Michael Schmid, held high-level discussions with Egyptian officials to improve cross-border judicial collaboration.

During their visit, the delegation engaged in strategic discussions with key Egyptian officials, including Minister of Justice Judge Adnan Fangary and Prosecutor General Mohamed Shawqi, as well as with the Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt. These high-level meetings established a strong foundation for enhanced cooperation in combating serious and organised crime.

A highlight of the visit was the expert workshop on 12 November at the Public Prosecution Training Institute. Representatives from Eurojust and the Egyptian Public Prosecution gathered to address challenges and share best practices in judicial cooperation. The interactive sessions focused on operational tools to enhance cross-border collaboration and improve the effectiveness of investigations and prosecutions.

The visit underscored the existing Working Arrangement between Eurojust and the Public Prosecution Office of Egypt, signed on 10 April 2025. The parties reinforced their commitment to bolstering cooperation between Eurojust and Egyptian authorities, with the workshop representing a first step towards increased coordination of cross-border investigations and prosecutions involving Egypt and EU Member States. The visit was supported by the EU funded CTJUST project within “the CTJUST Stream on Operational Justice”, which provides support to EU justice-related institutions to strengthen their mandate.

The productive meetings, expert workshop, and reinforcement of the Working Arrangement mark an advancement in combating cross-border criminal activities. This partnership not only bolsters the operational capacities of both Eurojust and Egyptian authorities, but also establishes a model for international collaboration. As global security challenges continue to evolve, such cooperative initiatives are vital for delivering timely and effective justice worldwide.
