This week, Eurojust hosted a high-level study visit of prosecutors from Kenya, Uganda, Mauritius and South Africa. The delegation met with President Schmid, who welcomed the commitment of African colleagues to advance the fight against impunity for the worst crimes under international law and looks forward to further deepening cooperation on areas of mutual interest. The delegation also met with other Eurojust colleagues, national desk members, the ICC, the Dutch and German war crimes units and civil society representatives. They attended the 39th Genocide Prosecution Network meeting.
The visit was organized by the National Authorities Against Impunity project in close collaboration with the Waymo Foundation. The National Authorities Against Impunity project was established in October 2024 for an initial period of four years. It aims to contribute to justice and accountability efforts for core international crimes by enhancing the cooperation between civil society organisations and national judicial authorities in both EU and non-EU countries. The visit this week is the second successful engagement with different regions from the African continent. In the fall of 2025, the project organized a similar visit for a Western African delegation, which subsequently resulted in setting up a Regional Network for Western Africa in early 2026.
