On 1 October, Eurojust’s President, Ms Michèle Coninsx, signed a Letter of Understanding on Cooperation between Eurojust and EUNAVFOR MED with the Italian Army Brigadier General Maurizio Riccò, Chief of Staff of the European Headquarters, establishing a framework to strengthen coordination and communication in the fight against illegal immigrant smuggling.
The Letter of Understanding was officially signed by Eurojust and EUNAVFOR MED at an official meeting in Rome. Both parties expressed their commitment to exchange strategic information of a non-operational nature, best practice, expertise and experience in the field of illegal immigrant smuggling.
A statement from the Italian National Anti-Mafia and Counterterrorism (DNAA) Prosecutor on the joint commitment of Eurojust and DNAA to facilitate the coordination of investigations is available here.
The Communication from the Commission on the EU Action Plan against migrant smuggling (2015 - 2020) envisages strengthening operational cooperation and information exchange between the relevant EU Agencies, Member States and States of origin and transit. In addition, on 22 June 2015, the European Union launched an EU military operation in the Southern Central Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED). The objective of this military operation is to undertake systematic efforts to identify, capture and dispose of vessels used by migrant smugglers or traffickers. In July 2015, Eurojust and EUNAVFOR MED agreed to unite efforts in this field.
