Mr Francisco Jiménez-Villarejo new National Member for Spain

On 4 December 2012, Mr Francisco Jiménez-Villarejo was appointed National Member for Spain at Eurojust. In accordance with Article 2(1) of the Eurojust Decision, the appointment was approved by the Secretary General of the Council of the European Union.

Mr Jiménez-Villarejo began his career as a prosecutor, joining the Prosecution Office of Seville, Spain, in 1990. After being promoted to the rank of Senior Prosecutor, Mr Jiménez-Villarejo worked at the General Prosecution Offices of Majorca (1996 – 1999), Seville (1999 – 2001), and Malaga (2001 – 2012), specialising in international cooperation and corruption cases.

Mr Jiménez-Villarejo was a founding member of the Spanish Prosecutors International Cooperation Network in 2002, was an expert member of the Phare Twinning Project in Bulgaria from 2005 – 2007, has been a contact point of the European Judicial Network since 2004, and has served as a member of the Permanent Committee of the European Judicial Training Network since 2011. He was a GRECO evaluator for the prevention of corruption in 2012 in Slovenia for the Council of Europe.

Mr Jiménez-Villarejo is a frequent speaker at high-level international seminars. He was a professor of Criminal and Procedural Law at the Police Academies of Andalucia and Majorca, and in the Public Law Department of the Universidad de las Islas Baleares. His various articles on international cooperation have been published in 15 books and journals.

Mr Jiménez-Villarejo said the following about his posting to Eurojust: “Considering my experience in international cooperation and corruption cases, and my involvement with the EJN and the EJTN, Eurojust is a stimulating challenge in my career. I intend to pursue my goal of fostering ties among the Spanish authorities, other Member States and Eurojust in dealing with serious cases of cross-border crime. I have a very committed team here and I look forward to the challenges ahead.”
