Thefts at French highway rest stops: organised crime network dismantled

On 4 and 5 April, arrests were made and searches carried out in France and Romania in a joint French and Romanian action, coordinated by the Romanian Directorate for Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism - Central Office (DIICOT) and the Prosecution Office of the District Court of Maramures, the Special Operations Directorate - General Inspectorate of Romanian Police, and representatives of the French National Gendarmerie, the Office of the Fight against Itinerant Delinquency.

Ten thefts of the contents of trucks at motorway rest stops in France took place between October 2015 and March 2017. The thefts, primarily of cosmetics, had a value estimated at EUR 3.5 million. The organised crime group, composed of 28 Romanian nationals, was also suspected of operating in other Member States.

The investigation began in Limoges by the Gendarmerie under the supervision of an investigative magistrate of JIRS Bordeaux. Eurojust and Europol supported the investigation from the beginning with a coordination meeting and operational meetings.
