On 6 and 7 June, Ms Michèle Coninsx, President, and Mr Raivo Sepp, Vice-President, hosted a visit to Eurojust by Mr Hiroshi Ozu, the Prosecutor General of Japan, and Mr Yoshimitsu Yamauchi, Deputy Director of the International Affairs Division, Criminal Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Justice of Japan.
The delegation met with the Presidency and the College, toured the building, and held a number of bilateral meetings with several National Desks.
On the second day, Mr Lukáš Starý, National Member for Czech Republic, chaired a session in which several presentations were made: Mr Leif Görts, National Member for Sweden, presented a case example on drug trafficking; Ms Anna Richterová, Deputy National Member for Czech Republic, presented a case example on trafficking in human beings; Mr Fernando Silva, Technical Adviser to the Data Protection Officer, gave a presentation on the processing of personal data; and Mr José Castillo García, Senior Legal Officer, gave a presentation on future cooperation between Eurojust and Japan. The Japanese delegation gave a presentation on cooperation with the European Union, Member States and Eurojust.
The goal of this visit was to enhance cooperation and streamline the execution of mutual legal assistance requests between Japan and the individual Member States. The visit resulted from the good cooperation Mr Ozu experienced between Japanese prosecutors and Eurojust, in particular the Belgian Desk, in a drug trafficking case in 2011.
